SUR Kirra Beach โ how did your affiliation with this beachfront project come about?
I have a long history with the owners of Cru Collective, having worked on a few private residential projects for them on the Gold Coast and Sydney.
With a number of projects under our belt together there is a lot of trust that has built on both sides. Cru have faith we will make the right design decisions for the project and their clients. We have the same belief that stunning interiors still need to be practical and suitable to the environment โ something that can often be overlooked in multi-residential projects.
Prior to SUR, we have recently completed the award winning Siarn project together with BDA so working on SUR together was a natural progression.
Designing for a wider audience needs to be carefully considered. The palette has to stand on its own and complement the architectural features, but also consider the individuality an owner will add once they move in. Majority of my clients are high end residential, so I understand the key requirements these clients enjoy. The classic aesthetic of the homes at SUR is a stunning stage for owners to showcase their own style.
Do you have a favourite design element?
The custom-made marble mosaic floor tile that greets you in each apartment lobby. It is such a striking feature and will be truly spectacular. The sample doesnโt do it justice. It is major wow factor -and paired with the light filled space and ocean views โ this entrance to the home is simply perfection.
Also, the beautiful visual comfort feature lighting throughout elevates the entire aesthetic and adds another layer of luxury and quality.
The chocolate and beige tones pair beautifully with the natural marble and stone surfaces and present a sense of sophisticated luxury. Natural elements, paired with timber joinery and earthy metals in the tapware and accessories, together reflect and celebrate a completely luxe vibe, which is echoed in the organic shape of the building and many internal curved elements. The neutral base is very sophisticated and will lend to each and every buyer no matter what their individual style is.
Iโm not a designer who chases trends. Trends come and go and therefore date. If youโre going to spend money it has to take you through a couple of decades. There is so much longevity in these apartments based on the layout, colour scheme and building finishes. Darren Greenaway from BDA and I had the same vision for this project from the very beginning, so it has been great being on the same page as the Architect from day one.
I am also very excited about the floor plan and layout, it has been absolutely perfected in what was a very unique footprint to begin with. The floor plan is unrivalled when it comes to full floor sky homes.
What are the keys to styling a SUR apartment โ any hints for the future residents?
The ocean front views and location are the heroes of SUR, and the apartments have been designed to make the most of these viewpoints. In terms of good interior design, it comes down to getting the proportions and composition right, and managing the balance of colour, shapes and textures. This will all need to be carefully considered whether it be in a typical apartment or the 2 storey penthouse.
Who is your design inspo?
So many Australian and international interior designers inspire me daily and every project! Each client has an individual aesthetic, a different budget, and sometimes existing furniture pieces or artwork that I need to consider. Itโs a journey and your design evolves pending on the brief and client. I like every client to feel like their home is a reflection of them.
Favourite part of design?
Building completion day and furniture installation day, the two days where the visions in my own head comes to life.
